Her experience includes supervision and therapy with people with lived / living experience and other workers responding to the opioid catastrophe, refugees and survivors of torture - including Indigenous people who have survived residential schools and other state violence, sexualised violence counsellors, mental health and substance misuse counsellors, housing and shelter workers, activists and working alongside gender and sexually diverse communities. Vikki is an Adjunct Professor and has written and presented internationally. A witnessing approach requires that we situate personal suffering in its socio-political context and resist the individualisation and medicalisation of suffering as ‘trauma’ and other mental illnesses. This training will explore working with trauma & resistance with women and children impacted by domestic violence and the lived experiences of First Nations people in Australia. Shouldering Each Other Up Amidst Death by Bad Policy and Structural Abandonment/Violence Virtual session - Tuesday, August 22, 2023 5-7pm EST People in our community are dying each day due to failed policies and structural violence. In the midst of this, peers, outreach teams and care workers are trying to respond to these crises as best they can. How can we, as supervisors, community supports or team leaders respond and hold people up (including ourselves) in the midst of this? Join us for a special virtual session with Vikki Reynolds related to responding to death and heartbreak in the streets of Rochester. Putting people’s deaths in the context of what Vikki calls “necropolitics” (policies that kill people) or leaving them to die in structural violence, Vikki strives to help teams respond to these crises while maintaining connection and humanity. During our time together, Vikki will address: • How tragic death lands differently in body and relationships • How we might respond to the grief AND rage that accompany this work • Maps she has developed for responding to these atrocious deaths (individual and collective) and maps developed for debriefing with connection and solidarity (resisting trauma) • How we might further develop collective care and mutual aid in and across organizations responding to these crises • How we might stay human in the face of inhuman policies and violence and develop a revolutionary love and solidarity • Witnessing our dead: how do we hold the dead alongside the living Vikki Reynolds PhD, RCC is an activist/therapist and a white settler on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. For the past decade she has been responding to the to daily loss of life related to the opioid crisis in downtown Vancouver, BC. Justice-doing as an ethical stance for therapy & community work

This work is informed by a spirit of solidarity and direct-action activism. Vikki will illuminate her stance on Justice Doing as a frame for community work and therapy. This work is informed by an intention for de-colonizing and justice-doing practice. Vikki will consider the intersections, tensions and affinities between community work practice and social justice activism while working in contexts of oppression and suffering, and weave our collective resistance to oppression and structural abandonment together with social movements.

Resisting Burnout & Vicarious Trauma & the Zone of Fabulousness

Vikki will differentiate Vicarious Trauma & Burnout from the spiritual and ethical pain that our work engenders when we are unable to provide dignity and social justice with the people we want to be useful to. We’ll explore our relationship to a believed-in hope, and resisting patronizing self-care prescriptions to workers. We will also consider a frame for Resisting Burn out that holds clients at the centre, based on how we treat people, and resist pathologizing ourselves and other workers as mentally ill and deficient…and that’s going to bring us to The Zone of Fabulousness…Where we resist enmeshment and disconnection, and hold connection, collective ethics and the person at the centre of our work.

Solidarity Teams Workshop for Managers with Vikki Reynolds Solidarity Teams : Collective Care & Collective Responsibility In this workshop we are going to address these questions: How can we build Solidarity Teams for our collective care and sustainability? How can we hold onto our solidarity and our fabulous and painful histories of joint struggle against multiple oppressions including Necropolitics & structural abandonment? How do we stay in dialogue, with respect, across time, without getting caught up in using power-over practices or re-enacting the abuses of power we are fighting against? How do we enact the analysis and justice-doing we want to create more of? How can we nurture ‘Cultures of Critique’, embrace hopeful skepticism and enact our collective ethics as social justice movements? When resisting powers that work to divide us, how do we enact collective accountability, embrace groundless solidarity and infinite responsibility, and co-create an ethical stance of believed-in hope? This is a workshop for Executive Directors, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, and Team Leads. There are two offerings of this 3 hour workshop: One in the morning of the 24th, and one in the afternoon of the 24th.
